Race strategy: segment by segment

KM 0-9Steady

Settle in

4:08/km – 4:15/km

Hold back through the crowded, flat opening — you bank nothing here, and that's the point.

KM 10-14Steady

Ride the downhill

4:05/km – 4:22/km

A short rise gives way to a favorable downhill — let the terrain carry you, don't push.

KM 15-22Steady

Hold the rhythm

4:09/km – 4:14/km

The flattest, most even stretch of the course — settle in and save your legs for the fade ahead.

KM 23-33Steady

First signs of fatigue

4:10/km – 4:16/km

Pace drifts up almost imperceptibly as fatigue starts to outweigh the flat terrain.

KM 34-40Steady

The fade begins

4:16/km – 4:25/km

Small grades and accumulated fatigue combine — this slowdown is the plan working, not you blowing up.

KM 41-42.3Final push

Empty the tank

4:15/km – 4:23/km

One last downhill gift, then everything you have left to the finish line.

3 mistakes you'll make on Frankfurt Marathon

1

Overpacing the flat opening kilometers

KM 0-9 is flat and crowded, and 4:13-4:15/km will feel conservative next to runners around you going out faster. Hold the number anyway: this segment is designed to bank nothing, and any early surplus gets paid back with interest after 30K.

2

Chasing the downhill splits at KM 11-14

The dip to 4:05-4:09/km through here comes from favorable grade, not from you finding extra gears. Treat it as a gift, not a new target pace, or you'll arrive at the 23-33K grind already in debt.

3

Panicking when the watch slows after 30K

From KM 23 onward the model has you drifting from roughly 4:13 to 4:24/km as fatigue builds on essentially flat ground. That drift is the plan working as intended: fighting it by surging will only accelerate a real blowup before the 40K mark.
